Susan B. Ford Professor in the School of Humanities and Sciences, and Professor of Biological Sciences and of Neurology and Neurological Sciences at Stanford University from 2001 to 2003, and a faculty member at the University of California, San Francisco from 1991 to 2001.

In addition, Tessier-Lavigne was a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator from 1994 to 2003.
